Don’t look so surprised.
It’s a remake. And a remake of something that’s neither vintage nor a current hit. And yet, it’s the freshest thing hitting the small screen in the Motherland.
HBO’s Entourage (2004-2011) is one of the pieces of original programming that put the cabler back on the map. I mean, why else would people pay an extra $15-20/month for just one TV channel (that was mostly movies you could rent elsewhere for cheaper anyway)?
What were you gonna say? “It’s not TV” ?
1. The Cast
Seo Kang Joon, Park Jung Min (love this guy), Cho Jin Woong, Lee Kwang Soo, Lee Dong Hwi are so well cast, it’s hard to imagine anyone else as their respective characters. Park Jung Min’s Ho Been is the real star, his character navigating the delicate juggle of a dynamic that now includes friendship and work, the two roles increasingly at odds with each other. And Seo Kang Joon’s physical characterizations are so genius it’s hard not to see that the actor is having a moment.
2. The Style
Slick cinematography and a unique tone sets it apart from the crowd. Check out the sweeping shots? One can only wonder how many jimmy jibs, Steadicams, and dolly tracks went behind a single episode. It’s also on a later timeslot, so there are more risks they can take, creatively or et cetera.
3. The (Hallyu) Biz
It’s a rare look at Hallyu, aka the Korean entertainment industry. And not in the usual glossed over, over-acted or skewed-in-a-frivolous-plot look. It feels more realistic, this one.
