Korean Films: Song Joong Ki, Kang Ha Neul, Park Seo Joon, & Lee Je Hoon Hit Theaters

And, on the silver screen:

Midnight Runners (청년경찰)

The s&h duo (sexy & handsome, y’all, get with me here) all over one feature length film. I already told ya so. Kang Ha Neul and Park Seo Joon play two bumbling police academy cadets that witness a crime. Buddy cop comedy with these two? I’m in. If only it could get to the US faster..sigh.

The Battleship Island (군함도)

Veteran’s helmer Ryu Seung Hwan returns with some familiar friends for a graphic and violent feature portraying the forced labor of Koreans by the Japanese during that war which split a nation in two, and provides seemingly endless cinematic fare, of late.

Hwang Jung Min’s the desperate father, trying to save his daughter from the danger and uncertainty of life during colonial occupation. Song Joong Ki spends much of his time bloody and dirt-faced (as most of the characters do) as a soldier secretly sent to free an independence fighter. Particularly impressive are a beautifully choreographed and gut-wrenching fight scene with So Ji Sub and Kim Min Jae (both nearly naked in the shower), and the visual artistry of Song Joong Ki’s first reveal on the island.

And, a reason to look forward to September:

I Can Speak

Lee Je Hoon’s gonna be there. ‘Nough said.

When Rain=Romance: 10 KDrama Umbrella Couples

Let it rain, baby.

Some Umbrella Couples were hitting the kdrama waves in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and Jealousy Incarnate.

Looking back, there have been a torrent (heh) of umbrella couples in kdrama history. Here are some more burned in ma brain; I even included some kdrama specials you may have missed.

If you didn’t, now ya heard. Rain=Romance. (Disclaimer: But not in real life.)

Hye Jin and Sung Joon [She Was Pretty, Episode 5]umbrella-she-was-pretty-ep5

Using a jacket as a makeshift umbrella, Hye Jin (Hwang Jung Eum) shields a traumatized Sung Joon (Park Seo Joon).

Jae Bong and Mi Ok [Reply 1988, Episode 10]umbrella-couple-jae-bong-ep10

Ooh, when you discover that you have a mutual friend connecting you to your future romance.

Bora and Sunwoo [Reply 1988, Episode 8]umbrella-bora-sunwoo-ep8

Sunwoo, Sunwoo, Sunwoo. Who knew you’d go for Bora Noona?

Jung Hwan and Duk Seon [Reply 1988, Episode 5]jung-hwan-umbrella-ep5

I know some of you may still be recovering from this couple’s final fate. Don’t forget – they had some great moments, too.

Sung Dong Il and Lee Il Hwa [Reply 1988, Episode 4]umbrella-parents-reply1988-ep4

When your husband catches you jacking an umbrella – at least he’s got the sense to show up with one.

Cindy and Baek Seung Chan [Producer, Episode 2]producer-ep2-umbrella

And some Umbrella Couples may not even involve being under one. Maybe you just lent a company umbrella to some chick and had to get her number to make sure she returned it so it wouldn’t get deducted from your paycheck.

Kim Ji Won and Lee Joon Gi [The Reason I’m Getting Married]screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-10-23-17-pm

This was a kdrama special that came out in 2014 (you can find it on YouTube). Stars familiar faces Hong Jong Hyun as Lee Joon Gi and Park Hee Bon as Kim Ji Won. What made this umbrella scene so memorable? The stolen kiss.

Ha Na and Sung Jae [The Time I’ve Loved You, Episode 3]screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-10-31-10-pmThis was quite the scandalous pull – especially from hoobae Sung Jae (Infinite’s L) reeling in sunbae Ha Na (Ha Ji Won) from a passing car’s tsunami (a now-cliched move).

Je Su Ho and Shim Bo Nui [Lucky Romance, Episode 7]lucky romance kdrama umbrella-couple

Because you need more Ryu Jun Yeol in yo life.

Dan Bi and Lee Do [Splash Splash Love, Episode 2]screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-10-05-54-pmKim Seul Gi and Yoon Doo Joon made for the Cutest Couple Ever in this kdrama special, and y’all already know how I love Kim Seul Gi.

Ah, the beauty of when the guy or girl of your dreams shows up with an umbrella exactly when you need it. If only I could say the same for this guy.

Sidenote: those Reply folks take their Umbrella Couples seriously.

Who else needs a rainy day?

This Week’s Pick: Lucky Romance

Ryu Jun Yeol is back! If you watched Reply 1988, you’re probably already in love with the actor. I’ve been anticipating his next drama, and it did not disappoint.

Lucky Romance premiered this week, with Ryu Jun Yeol as Je Su Ho,  a technically-minded genius programmer who heads up a video game company. Based on a webtoon, the drama’s off to a good start, with a swiftly moving plot (and some ratings to match).  Hwang Jung Eum (She Was Pretty, Kill Me, Heal Me) stars opposite as Shim Bo Nui, an uber-superstitious sort of lady who visits a shaman regularly after some horrific family tragedies. She’s a struggling part-timer who does nearly half a dozen jobs (cocktail waitress, janitor, garment factory, chicken restaurant employee, convenience store clerk, programmer). (However, in what universe is a programmer out of work in 2016?)

As mentioned, the drama wasted no time in set-up, while also crafting some fun scenes: Su Ho fights a giant bunny, Bo Nui gets stinking drunk (what kdrama would be one without it) and madly searches for a man born in the year of the tiger (in case you’re unfamiliar, ‘a la the Chinese zodiac signs given for every year). I’ll stop here before I give away too many spoilers.

Lee Cho Hee (Six Flying Dragons, Who Are You: School 2015) plays an employee at Su Ho’s company, while Lee Soo Hyuk (Neighborhood Hero) plays a tennis star with connections to Bo Nui’s past, while Lee Chung Ah (Vampire Detective) is his manager.

Huge jump for Ryu Jun Yeol, as the actor blew up from obscurity to megawatt status from Reply 1988’s power, going from an ensemble drama to his first leading role; nice to see a talented actor movin’ on up!
