This Week’s Pick: “Prison Playbook”

This show’s been picking up my drama-watching doldrums of winter.

Prison Playbook (슬기로운 감빵생활)

A pro baseball player finds himself incarcerated but discovers an old friend is a prison guard.

Star-studded ensemble (omnibus?!) cast of familiar faces, and vibes are a cross between Shawshank and the Reply series with so many bromances you’ll lose count. Smart, steady, slow-burning storyline vibes and strong characters subtly draw you in until it’s 3am and you still gotta get up for work tomorrow…

Cast: Park Hae Soo, Jung Kyung Ho, Sung Dong Il, Lim Hwa Young (Chief Kim) Choi Moo Sung (Reply 1988), Lee Kyu Hyung (Stranger) Jung Woong In (the bad guy in every drama), Krystal Jung, Choi Sung Won (Reply 1988),  Jung Hae In (While You Were Sleeping), Kim Kyung Nam (Strongest Deliveryman), Park Ho San (Defendant)Jung Min Sung (Cinderella and the Four Knights), Kang Seung Yoon (of boy band WINNER), Kang Ki Doong (Tomorrow With You), Lee Tae Sun (Entertainer), Shin Jae Ha (While You Were Sleeping), Seo Ji Hoon (School 2017).

Reply vibes aplenty, with a sweet hip hop- and pop-infused soundtrack (Kang Seung Yoon, Mino, Woo Won Jae, Eric Nam, Zion.T), cool cameos, and fresh faced talent in abundance.

One To Watch: Kim Sung Cheol (김성철)

Kim Sung Cheol, aka “Jailbird,” on the show, is the newbie actor to watch. Catch him in episodes 1 and 2. Don’t worry – he’ll be back – he appears again later in the series.

Full series now available on Netflix.
16 episodes.
Writer: Jung Bo Hoon
Director: Shin Won Ho (all three Reply series).

This Interruption Brought to You By The Claw – Missing 9

He’s a man on a mission.

We take a break from our usual drama tropes and crazy mofos for a round of The Claw in Missing 9, Eposode 14.

Ah. That Seo Joon Oh (Jung Kyung Ho) gets all the fun breaks, eh? Last time it was ddukbokgi and a spa trip.

Of course, who could forget Toy Crane (Lee Sun Kyun) and his hapless attempts? Maybe the two should go toe-to-toe.

Best Kdrama Faces-Of-The-Week: Week Ending March 4, 2017

Actors, at best, convey emotion without uttering a single word. In fact, a single glance alone can speak volumes.

Here are a few highlights from this week.
